Elite performers are routinely encouraged to reflect on their performance; yet, they are rarely taught how to disengage from reflection once it has served its purpose. Within high performance environments, reflection is commonly framed as an unquestioned good. Athletes are expected to review film, replay mistakes, analyze decisions, and mentally rehearse alternative responses. When applied effectively, reflection supports learning, adaptation, and long-term development. However, when applied poorly (or inconsistently), unregulated reflection can shift into rumination, a repetitive and self-focused pattern of thinking that generates little new information, zaps significant energy, impacts emotions, and offers no clear path forward.
This distinction carries meaningful consequences. Rumination has been consistently associated with increased anxiety and depressive symptoms, impaired concentration and focus, reduced cognitive flexibility, and slower emotional and cognitive recovery following errors or setbacks. From a performance perspective, rumination is particularly costly under pressure. When attention becomes absorbed by past mistakes or feared future outcomes, athletes lose access to present-moment information that is essential for effective timing, coordination, and decision-making. Attentional Control Theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding this process, suggesting that anxiety and self-evaluative processing reduce the efficiency of goal-directed attention, while increasing susceptibility to distraction from both internal and external sources (Eysenck et al., 2007).
Prevalence of Rumination in Elite Athletes
Rumination is highly relevant for elite performers because the central question is not whether the mind will revisit mistakes, as this is an expected cognitive response under stress, but whether that reflection facilitates a disengagement from the past, or instead traps the individual in a repetitive loop. Data collected by the Premier Mindset Institute (PMI) highlights the scope of this challenge. Only 31 percent of professional and Olympic athletes report that they are able to consistently let go of unhelpful or negative thoughts, rather than becoming caught up in them. This finding challenges a common assumption in elite sport. The difficulty does not stem from a lack of insight, motivation, or psychological toughness. Rather, many athletes demonstrate strong reflective capacity, but limited skill in attentional disengagement. Unprocessed reflection may therefore represent one of the most under-recognized performance constraints in elite environments.
Structured Reflection Versus Rumination
Our work at the PMI draws a clear distinction between structured reflection and rumination. Structured reflection is typically purposeful, time-limited, and oriented toward learning, process, or values-based action. Rumination, by contrast, is repetitive and passive, and tends to focus on causes and consequences without resolution (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008). It often takes the form of persistent self-questioning, such as repeatedly asking why an error occurred, worrying about whether it will happen again, or judging oneself for falling short of internal standards. Rather than facilitating problem-solving, rumination consumes cognitive resources and reinforces emotional reactivity. Research on repetitive negative thinking demonstrates that rumination prolongs stress responses and interferes with cognitive flexibility, outcomes that directly undermine the demands of high-level performance (Zareian et al., 2021). The PMI finding that only 31 percent of elite athletes consistently let go of unhelpful thoughts align closely with this literature, suggesting that high standards and deep personal investment may actually increase vulnerability to this pattern of negative thinking, rather than protect against it.
Rumination Under Stress
Rumination tends to persist under pressure not because athletes lack discipline or intention, but because the brain is operating in accordance with its evolved function to detect threat and seek control. Two well-established findings help explain why attempts to simply stop thinking about unwanted thoughts are often ineffective. Research on ironic mental control processes demonstrates that deliberate thought suppression can increase the frequency of the very thoughts one is attempting to avoid, particularly under conditions of cognitive load. When athletes attempt to push thoughts away, a monitoring process remains active to check whether the unwanted thought has returned, thereby maintaining its salience. Wegner et al. (1987) demonstrated that such suppression efforts can produce a rebound effect, offering a compelling explanation for why intrusive thoughts become more persistent during competition, when time pressure, fatigue, evaluation, and emotional intensity are high.
In addition, anxiety has been shown to narrow focus inward. Anxiety shifts patterns away from goal-directed data toward threat detection processes, increasing distractibility and reducing processing efficiency (Eysenck et al., 2007). Under stress, attention is more likely to gravitate toward internal cues such as worry, pain, self-evaluation, and error checking, rather than toward task-relevant external information. Athletes may continue to perform, but with greater mental effort and reduced consistency. From this perspective, rumination reflects a predictable outcome of untrained focus-management rather than a failure of willpower.
Addressing Rumination
A large body of psychological research links rumination to impaired concentration, slower cognitive processing, and diminished emotional recovery following stress (Zareian et al., 2021). In sport contexts, these effects manifest as difficulty resetting after mistakes, prolonged emotional carryover between plays or events, and an increased likelihood of cascading errors. The Intentional Attention framework directly addresses these processes by altering the individual’s relationship with internal experiences rather than attempting to eliminate them. The framework emphasizes greater awareness of the brain’s default patterns, acceptance of why those patterns emerge, and then practical tools to redirect focus toward values-aligned action. This approach helps athletes view unhelpful thoughts as mental events rather than literal truths, while using process-based or values-based attention as a mechanism to redirect focus toward meaningful performance.
Randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews conducted in sport and performance populations indicate that these types of acceptance-based frameworks can enhance psychological flexibility, reduce stress-related symptoms, and support focus skills relevant to performance (Eysenck et al., 2007). Although methodological quality varies across studies, the overall pattern of findings supports the conclusion that learning to disengage from unproductive or “distracted” thinking improves functioning. A randomized controlled trial examining a sport-specific Acceptance and Commitment Therapy group intervention reported improvements in athletes’ mental well-being and stress symptoms, underscoring the relevance of acceptance, defusion, and values-based attention for reducing rumination and supporting what may be described as reflection that facilitates disengagement (Ronkainen et al., 2025).
Structured Reflection as Disengagement: An Attentional Skills Framework
From a PMI perspective, the objective is not to eliminate reflection, but to structure it in a manner that allows attention to disengage before thinking becomes unproductive. Structured reflection as disengagement relies on the development of specific attentional skills. Athletes must first develop greater awareness and learn when reflection shifts into rumination, which often requires close monitoring of where focus is directed, and whether it is serving the immediate task. Increased metacognitive awareness has been associated with improved self-regulation and reduced emotional reactivity. Athletes also benefit from naming cognitive processes in a neutral manner, such as recognizing that the mind is replaying an event, which aligns with cognitive defusion research demonstrating that labeling thoughts reduces their emotional impact. Importantly, this process is distinct from self-criticism, as judgment tends to intensify struggle, whereas non-judgemental observation facilitates disengagement. Finally, disengagement is completed through deliberate reorientation of focus toward a functionally relevant anchor, such as a physical cue, a tactical intention, an experiential learning moment, or a values-based commitment. This capacity to return attention to chosen cues represents the core skill of intentionally directing focus toward what matters in the present moment.
Implications for Athletes
In elite environments, unstructured review can inadvertently reinforce rumination through constant analysis without closure. Structuring this process to include extraction of learning, followed by deliberate disengagement, introduces balance and protects cognitive resources. For coaches, sport psychology practitioners, and organizations, this approach involves teaching athletes when to reflect and when to let go, training focus skills with the same intentionality applied to physical skills, and normalizing the presence of negative thoughts while reducing their control over behavior.
Conclusion
The PMI finding that only 31 percent of elite athletes consistently let go of unhelpful thoughts highlights a significant but addressable challenge in high performance environments. The issue is not insufficient reflection, insight, or toughness, but rather a lack of training in how reflection ends. Empirical research demonstrates that rumination impairs focus and emotional recovery, that thought suppression increases cognitive stickiness under pressure, and that acceptance-based and mindfulness-informed approaches reduce rumination while enhancing cognitive flexibility. Within this framework, reflection itself is not the problem. Unprocessed reflection is. When athletes learn to use reflection as a mechanism for disengagement rather than replay, they regain focus control and are better positioned to execute effectively in the present moment, under pressure.
